LivingHomes Introduces Low-Cost C6

LivingHomes is considered the premier builder of pre-frabricated (pre-fab) sustainable homes.  Founded in 2006 the company features homes designed by Ray Kappe and architectural firm Kieran Timberlake. LivingHomes may be pre-fab but can also be customized and are available nationally.

This weekend their new C6 model will open for tours in Long Beach at The Long Beach Performing Arts Center and in Palm Springs as part of Modernism Week.

At $179,000 (prices may vary state to state) the 1,232 square foot Eichler-inspired C6 has three bedrooms and two baths and according to the LivingHomes website the price includes a “lifetime of happiness.”  If you are thinking the square footage is a bit smaller than the national average for new homes you are right because it is -by 1,148 sq. The C6 shouldn’t feel any smaller with an open floor plan and design that is built around a courtyard for easy indoor/outdoor living. The home can be built in less than two months and installed on-site in a day. The C6 has snazzy but still eco-friendly features like cork flooring, clerestory windows, and a full-feature lighting control system accessible via iPhone.

LivingHome strives to meet environmental goals with their Six Zeros of Sustainability (Z6). C6 meets these goals:

  • Zero Energy:  Energy efficient lighting and appliances, smart heating/AC control system to reduce power usage, photovoltaics for more than 100% of power needs.
  • Zero Carbon/Waste: Recycled materials & Cradle to Cradle inspired materials. Carbon off-set included in purchase price to counter energy used to create the home.
  • Zero Water: Low flow water fixtures. Grey water ready system.
  • Zero Emissions: No VOC paint. Formaldehyde-free millwork.
  • Zero Ignorance: Real time feedback on energy usage.

"It has always been our most important goal to develop an affordable LivingHome," said Steve Glenn, CEO of LivingHomes. "The C6 is not only our lowest cost LivingHome – it's half the cost of current models – but it's also the first to achieve our most important Z6 Environmental Goals, and, we believe it's the first production home to feature Cradle to Cradle® inspired materials and a LEED Platinum level environmental program. It's also the easiest and fastest LivingHome to build."

The C6 is a special home in the LivingHomes portfolio because it was designed through a partnership with Make it Right. Brad Pitt founded the non-profit organization to help build sustainable homes in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward post-Katrina. A portion of the sales of C6 homes will be donated to Make it Right.
