What is "waste oil"? Waste oil fuel sources can also be used transmission oils, cooking and vegetable oils, hydraulic oils, combustible synthetic oils or any oils up to 50 S.A.E. With the flip of a switch our burner will safely burn #1 and #2 fuel oils.
What will it cost to heat with waste oil? If you generate a sufficient supply of your own waste oil, the cost of heating with waste oil is ZERO. If you need to purchase some or all of your waste oil there are oil suppliers in most states. The rate of waste oil holds steady at about the $.30 to .50 per gallon delivered! The cost of waste oil does not fluctuate with the cost of other petroleum products but rather is determined by ONE FACTOR: The prerogative of the Recycle, who is paid to pick up the waste oil, filters it and makes it available for resale.
Where can I obtain waste oil if I do not generate it or do not generate enough to meet my heating requirements? Because waste oil is truly a waste product that cannot be safely dumped into the ground, landfills or waterways, commercial entities that generate large quantities of waste oil must typically pay a third party for proper disposal. You can purchase waste oil from these third party recyclers or buy it directly from the producers of the waste oil. Examples of businesses in your area that produce waste oil are restaurants, quick lube oil change shops, automotive repair shops and factories with hydraulic equipment.
What is the BTU potential of a typical gallon of waste oil? A typical gallon of waste oil contains 163,000 to 240,000 BTU per gallon, which can be more than TWO TIMES the energy potential per gallon of LP gas. LP gas has a potential for 92,000 BTU per gallon.
Is there smoke or noxious odor when burning waste oil? The SeaBird Pulse Combustion Turbine waste oil burner will emit little odor and NO smoke because the various proprietary components of our burner work in concert to achieve a CLEAN burn. Our waste oil burner will meet or exceeds all EPA requirements for such appliances or devices.
What sort of regular maintenance or service is anticipated? Planned maintenance will consists of vacuuming residual ash and dust from inside the dual access doors in order to maximize efficiency. Total time to clean averages less than 30 minutes. The reusable oil filter included with the burner may require occasional cleaning which can be quickly accomplished by rinsing in a solvent bath. The pyrocatalytic converter block does not have to be removed for servicing.
How reliable are these burners really? The SeaBird Pulse Combustion Turbine is "state of the art". It will be just as reliable as a conventional gas-fired burner system. Our burner will ignite at 20 degrees F below zero and uses solid-state ignition and primary controls for industrial reliability standards.

Potential Tax Credits
Burning waste oil in the SeaBird Pulse Combustion turbine will be EPA approved and could eliminate the liability of ridding yourself of potentially hazardous waste. In turn you save thousands of dollars on your fuel bill. Because re-using the waste oil as a fuel is considered recycling, the entire system can usually qualify for substantial tax credit considerations.
Check with your state EPA or Environmental Offices for specific tax credits applicable to you. The following list includes information from some states. This is not intended to be a complete list.

That brings us to the entrepreneurial end of things. Only about 200 million of the 600 million gallons (annually) of crankcase oil sold in the U.S. is recycled. That leaves about 400 million gallons going to waste -- usually dumped into our environment. With a drive on to clean up the cities and punish polluters, businesses that generate waste oils, and even individuals, find it hard to dispose of without paying a disposal fee.
This is where a clever person might find almost limitless opportunities. From selling small power production systems to homeowners and small shop owners, to setting up larger systems for municipalities and industry, there is plenty of room for creating new businesses based on a clean process of converting waste to electricity.

1995: The ship was struck from the Naval Register on April 4.
2004: The Sea Bird's current disposition is a tuna long liner (fishing boat) out of San Diego, CA.
2006: Design of the Tesla Turbine began on June 11, 2006. The Sea Bird was sold by Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service for commercial service.
2007: The Sea Bird was drydocked for renovations.
2008: The Sea Bird setting sail to Sea-Tac in Seattle, WA.
2009 - 2010: The Sea Bird is currently docked at Seattle Sea-Tac.
